Ken’s collection is inspired by the way family stories unfold over time and moments that feel true for all of us. His artwork highlights the significant gestures of joy and love that define our lives.
Ken Sheldon started at Hallmark nearly 20 years ago, after working as a creative intern in illustration. Being an artist can be challenging and is usually very busy. But for Ken, the work is enormously rewarding and enjoyable.
Hometown and school: I am from Massachusetts and attended the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida.
Inspiration: A sunlit window, wildflowers in a jar or in a field, dark tree trunks in a landscape of newly fallen snow. I am also inspired by anything well and thoughtfully made.
Themes I’m drawn to: The beauty and “serendipity” of nature and capturing and conveying feeling.
Best advice: Don’t try to emulate what others have done. Try to answer your own questions.
Happy place (when I’m being creative): I like to work wherever I can deliver the best results. Sometimes that is a quiet studio with no music. Sometimes it is outside, painting on-location. And occasionally, it’s a studio with a “busy” atmosphere and lots of energy.
Favorite card (so far): A Christmas boxed card I made a few years ago is my favorite. The card has a figure in the lower right, ice-skating through a pristine landscape. The finish is nice paper with several foils. The figure is embossed.
When I’m not working: I like to spend time outdoors—or anywhere—with my family. We also love to travel together, play games together and eat meals together. I love to ice-skate.
